Story

Bittersweet is inspired by Vietnam Veterans and others that were not welcomed back after serving our country.

Lyrics

BITTERSWEET

As I watch our heroes come home

Memories of my own

Stir inside me once again

No one welcomed us back then

 Bittersweet Bittersweet

I'm proud of those that serve today

I stand beside them in my own way

But the memories make me feel

Something so deep something so real

Bittersweet Bittersweet

We pledged allegiance

We went along

But something back there went wrong

We gave you blood,

We gave you lives

We came home

You criticized

Bittersweet Bittersweet

I am strong and still standing here

I'm living proof that you can live with fear

It's time we welcome each one home

Cause no one should ever feel that alone

Bittersweet

Many arms are open as our heroes return

It's nice to know a country can learn

Story

This is the 4th song Kelly has recorded that honors members of the military. It's a Christmas song for their families. It's a subject close to Kelly's heart after living with her uncle Roger before and after he served in Vietnam. Colors Of December was written after a conversation with DJ and friend Fred John Boenig. Fred had lost his son who was serving in Afghanistan which made him a Gold Star Dad. He explained to Kelly that Blue Stars turning to Gold refers to the service flags people would place in their windows during wartime. A flag with a blue star meant a member of that family or organization was serving in the war. If the blue star was replaced with a gold star, this indicated that the soldier had died in battle.

Lyrics

December is upon us this year
Time to welcome those we hold so dear
Give a little more Spread a little cheer
December is upon us this year
The colors of December shine so bright
With Red, Green, Gold and Silver Light
On the coldest morning or the darkest night
The colors of December shine so bright
So get a tree extra tall
To honor those who gave it all
And for each of the families that were told
*Their blues stars have turned to gold
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Sing Hallelujah
For Peace on Earth
Hold each other tight and don’t forget
Keep each other close and don’t forget
This day’s on a soldier you never met
Hold each other tight and don’t forget
And get a tree extra tall
To honor those who gave it all
And for each of the families that were told
*Their blues stars have turned to gold
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Sing Hallelujah
For Peace on Earth
And Peace for the families that were told
Their blues stars have turned to gold.

And Peace for the families that were told
Their blues stars have turned to gold.

Lyrics

Got word this morning I’m headed off to war

Nothing ever felt so hard in all my years before

But two years and counting I gave my word

You are now a soldier is what I heard

So I’ll go, I’ll go, I’ll go

This I know

The difference of opinion in this country is good

You say what you feel is right and I’ll do what I should

I’m just like you a living, breathing, loving man

Standing up for freedom the best way I can

Let the rain fall down on me

This is who I am can't you see

I fight for the right to be free

Let the rain fall down on me

As I stand here I believe

We all have the right to be free

Not sure what will happen, I'm not sure that I will live

But it would be so much better if you would just give me a little smile

Maybe shake my hand while I leave this town

I hope next year we’ll all be just hanging around

Cause I’m just like you a living, breathing, freedom loving man

Lyrics

STATESIDE

Married a girl strong as can be

Her job was fighting for her country

But all he wanted was to hold her tight

And have her back in his arms safe stateside

He was shipped off to a war

They knew what he was fighting for

But all they wanted was to hold him tight

And have him back in their arms safe stateside

Won't you bring em home safely

Bring em him so they can see

That they are what we really care about

Two years in she lost her love

No doubt that she was so proud of his service

To his fellow countrymen

But it hurt, he was gone and she wanted him back again

Won't you bring em home safely

Bring em him so they can see

That they are what we really care about

They love their country all too well

When they say goodbye it's hard to tell

That all they want is hold their loved ones tight

And be back in their arms safe stateside

Won't you bring em home safely

Bring em him so they can  see

That they are what we really care about

Won't you bring em home safely

Bring em him so they can see

That they are what we really care about
